We live in a kaleidoscope of a world
A fact all the more pertinent when we consider the unique position of Singapore as a convergence of cultures – an island where our streets are confluences of languages, where diversity coalesces.
Fluency in more than one language is only natural whether for our quotidian existence or for more specific aims of professional or academic interest. Each language opens new doors of opportunities and in this competitive world menaced by inflation and economic recession, who would not want this foot in the door?
A language is more than linguistic rules.
It is a lifelong process of learning and exploration of a culture, which, at times implicitly, promotes the prerequisite understanding to reach the heart and achieve effective communication respecting societal norms. Thus, you gain more than respect as a language learner; you are respected for being human.
There are no difficult languages – only different ones;
There are no bad learners – only inadequate methods.

It’s about understanding your role in the world, your role with regards to the world. Each language you embark on expands your horizons, giving you a new vantage point from which to interpret the world around you. We search incessantly to advance our knowledge and experiences but have we ventured to this new dimension before us?
Learning a language is possible
Stories abound with everyday people comfortably employing a new language following a year or two of studies. The Foreign Service Institute of the United States furnishes estimates of under 25 weeks for a native English speaker with language learning experience to gain proficiency in another language closely related to English. Perhaps it should not be considered so difficult to learn a new language.
